Before I Am Beautiful

I’ve had a particularly strange few days recently. I do not know if I am burning out from everything I do on a daily basis, or just hitting a creative wall. Either way, it has made for a rough few days in the photography department. On the plus side, I did manage to play around with a new lighting setup and will have photos from that later this week.

This image stems from a walk I took in search for inspiration. I wandered down to the railroad tracks and just moseyed along looking at everything and nothing. I found a few items that will make for great shots during better lighting, but I was out in the middle of the afternoon, and thus the lighting was far too harsh for anything decent. I knew this before I left, but I enjoyed the walk regardless.

As I returned home I was looking at the lawn and happened to notice this tiny caterpillar on a single blade of grass. Thankfully I decided to walk around with my 60mm macro. So I knelt down and snagged a few shots by hand. Pleased by this, I set the camera at my desk, grabbed a cold brew and watched the storm clouds roll in. This was a great way to end the weekend.

On a side note, I joined the ever growing community of 500px. So far I am really liking it. The community aspect is lacking a bit, but the site goes above and beyond what many photo sharing sites off. Plus the images on the site are spectacular. I am planning on spending the $50 and getting an “awesome” account! You can find me here: www.500px.com/chrisnitz

Enjoy!

  1. I have no idea if that’s his head or his ass, he’s a curious looking caterpillar indeed. Great shot though, and love the green canvas he’s on.

    • Thanks man, and that is his head ;) I needed to drop down a few stops to help bring more of the little guy into focus. Live and learn!

  2. This is just awesome man, I love the details, great macro and low POV.

I’ve definitely been there before too. It seems like nothing on my viewfinder looks good. But then there are other times where every opporunity presented is great photographic one! Keep plugging away!

    • Thank you Dave, and I plan on plugging away like a pro :)

  3. Awesome macro stuff Chris. I have no problem setting up my tripod to take long exposure landscape shots, but somehow I just don’t have the patience for the little stuff like this. You do so well capturing details like this my friend, well done!

  4. I’ve been dying to get a macro lens. I had one for my iPhone and ended up dropping it through the crack in a boardwalk – this hasn’t been my week for equipment (I dropped my Promote Control in the Hudson yesterday :) — sweet shot man!
